About

Span the Gap Build challenges every team to construct one section of a bridge to exact customer specifications, while dealing with limited resources, communication barriers and strict deadlines.

Each team designs, decorates and brands its own section, and awards are given for the most creative engineering design, the best branding and the most efficient use of resources.

The final stage brings every section together, as each team’s work is installed as part of one huge company bridge. Teams must make sure their section meets the agreed standards so that it connects perfectly with its neighbours.

The exciting grand finale sees a remote-controlled vehicle driven across the full length of the bridge, the moment of truth that shows whether every team has delivered on its promises. It is a natural fit for organisations working to connect departments, offices or newly merged teams.

Learning outcomes

Span the Gap Build makes interdependence visible. Each section is only useful if it meets the standards agreed with neighbouring teams.

Limited resources and communication barriers push teams to plan carefully, ask the right questions and share information early.

Branding and decorating each section adds creativity and gives teams a chance to express their identity within a shared structure.

The vehicle crossing the finished bridge is a powerful symbol of collaboration. Participants leave with a clear understanding of how good communication and shared standards help an organisation work as one. The image of the completed bridge is also a strong visual story for internal communications after the event.

Facilitators help teams agree their measurements early and keep the atmosphere positive when problems appear. The awards for design, branding and efficiency mean several teams can celebrate, while the crossing itself is a success the whole group shares.
