About

In Domino Effect Machine, teams work together to create one complex, life-size contraption. Each team builds a device that performs a simple task and links it to the next team’s device, so that activating one triggers the next in sequence.

Teams test and rework their device again and again to make sure it will work properly every time.

They then collaborate with neighbouring teams to ensure a perfect hand-over from one machine to the next, until every device is ready to work as part of one complete cascade of cause and effect.

When everything is ready, the first team sets off its device, which triggers the next team’s creation, and so on until a giant cascade has travelled all the way around the room, ending in a wonderfully simple yet spectacular final action. It is a memorable centrepiece for a full-day event or conference.

Learning outcomes

Domino Effect Machine shows how every part of an organisation depends on the parts around it. A single weak link can stop the whole chain.

Repeated testing teaches resilience and continuous improvement. Teams learn to treat failure as information and keep refining until their device works reliably.

Hand-overs between devices require careful coordination with neighbouring teams, highlighting the importance of clear interfaces between departments.

The final cascade creates a shared moment of tension and celebration. Teams leave with a powerful image of what they achieved together and a lasting reminder that success depends on everyone playing their part. Many organisations film the cascade and use it in later communications.

Over a full day, teams also learn to pace themselves, share tools and support one another when frustration builds. The sense of relief and joy when the final action happens is something participants talk about long after the event.

Program flow

  1. Briefing

Teams learn how the giant contraption will work and which part of the sequence they own.

  2. Plan the device

Teams design a device that performs a simple task and connects to their neighbours.

  3. Build and test

Teams build their device and test it repeatedly until it works every time.

  4. Link the chain

Neighbouring teams fine-tune each hand-over so the action flows smoothly between devices.

  5. The cascade

The first device is triggered, and the chain reaction travels around the room to the finale.

Frequently asked questions

How many participants can take part?

From 10 to 500, split into smaller teams.

How long does it last?

Around 5 hours, including the briefing and wrap-up.

Is it suitable for large groups?

Yes. More teams simply mean a longer and more spectacular chain reaction.

Can it run indoors or outdoors?

Either. We can run it indoors, outdoors or a mix of both, depending on the venue and the season.

What if the chain breaks?

Teams fix the link and try again, which is part of the challenge and the fun.
