Mission Machine Makers
Design it, build it, test it: a robot made for the mission.

About
Mission Machine Makers is an innovative hands-on activity in which teams design and build a robot, purpose-made for a set task, from a wide range of components. It suits innovation days, engineering and technology firms, and any group that enjoys a practical challenge.
Each team receives a list of tasks, some competitive and some collaborative, that its robot must complete. Reading the brief carefully at the start saves a great deal of rebuilding later.
Teams then design their machine, matching motors, MDF chassis, covers and electrical and electronic parts to the skills it will need.
Once built, each team trials its robot to see whether it can complete the task. Finally, everyone gathers to watch the creations in action and celebrate every robot that rises to the challenge.
Learning outcomes
Mission Machine Makers develops discussion, planning and decision-making skills from the moment teams begin shaping ideas for their robot.
Creative thinking and resource management come into play as teams decide how to make their machine stand out with the parts available. Every component choice is a trade-off, so teams must listen to different ideas and agree quickly.
Through building and trialling, teams apply design thinking: testing what works and improving step by step. A failed trial is not the end, only useful information for the next attempt.
The finished robot is proof of innovation, creativity and effective team dynamics.
Watching every machine take on its mission gives the whole group a shared sense of curiosity and achievement, and plenty of laughter when a robot surprises its makers.
