About

Europe’s gardens, woodlands and wetlands are home to birds, bats and insects whose habitats are under pressure. Wildlife Haven Builders lets your group help, as teams build sustainable bird boxes, insect hotels and bat boxes that give local creatures a safe place to live.

Before building begins, teams earn their materials by completing eco challenges on tablets. The challenges are creative, mental and physical at varying levels of difficulty, and teams send their best people to the challenges they can win.

Strong leadership, strategy and communication make all the difference, as teams can gain an edge by managing several challenges at once.

With materials secured, teams divide roles and build three habitats from 3D plans, then decorate them to agreed criteria. The finished habitats can be donated to a local school, community garden or nature reserve.

Learning outcomes

Wildlife Haven Builders is practical, inclusive and enjoyable, with a positive local impact.

Participants learn about local ecology and how human activity affects birds, bats and insects, and discover simple actions that help these populations thrive.

Earning materials through challenges encourages teams to weigh risk against reward and speak up about the tasks they can complete with confidence.

Clear roles and good communication make the build run smoothly, and quieter colleagues often shine in the tasks that suit them best.

Seeing the finished habitats go to a good home gives the day a lasting purpose and leaves teams proud of what they have achieved together.

Facilitators provide clear guidance throughout, so every team completes its habitats on time and with real care. The relaxed format also makes it an excellent icebreaker for new teams.
