Cardboard Boat Regatta
Build a boat that floats, then race it across the water.

About
Cardboard Boat Regatta is a creative build-your-own-boat challenge that is perfect for summer events beside a lake, river, pool or coastline. Teams choose a boat design, gather a set of unusual building materials and combine everyone’s skills to build a vessel that can genuinely float.
Planning matters from the start. Teams must agree on a design, share out the building tasks and make the most of every material, knowing their creation will soon be put to the test.
Then comes the big moment. The boats are launched, and the finale can be a race or regatta, a mock sea battle or an adventure to recover sunken treasure.
It is a fun, energetic way to show that a task that seems impossible becomes entirely achievable when people collaborate and coordinate their efforts. Cheering from the shore is guaranteed.
Learning outcomes
Cardboard Boat Regatta turns planning and resource management into a hands-on adventure. Teams must use limited materials wisely and think carefully about design before the first cut is made.
Clear roles keep the build on track. Some people design, some build and some test, and success depends on everyone sharing progress and solving problems together.
The launch is an honest test of quality. Teams see immediately whether their decisions paid off, which encourages reflection and learning without blame.
Win or sink, the finale creates a burst of laughter and shared emotion. The experience strengthens bonds across the group and gives everyone a story to retell for years. It is an ideal activity for summer offsites and lakeside retreats.
Facilitators also make sure safety comes first, so everyone can enjoy the launch with confidence.
