About

Every team receives the same kit of bamboo, rope and connectors, but only one section of the plan. Sections must join perfectly with the teams on either side, so engineers, negotiators and builders all have a job.

At the end the whole bridge is assembled in one line and tested under load in front of everyone. When it holds, the cheer is shared by the whole company.

Learning outcomes

Interfaces matter. The hardest part is not the section, it is the joint with the next team, just like handovers between departments.

Every team owns its part and the whole result at the same time. The debrief asks where the joints are in your own company and who looks after them.

Program flow

  1. Briefing and team roles

Teams receive kits and section plans, and choose engineers, builders and a liaison.

  2. Design and agree

Liaisons meet neighbouring teams to agree the joints and the build standard.

  3. Build your section

Teams build and test their section, trading spare parts with others.

  4. Assembly and load test

All sections are connected and the bridge is tested under load.

  5. Debrief

What made the joints work, and where are the joints in our own company?
